Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the Engineering School of the University of Lisbon, aims to contribute to the development of society, promoting excellence in higher education, in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology by developing Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) activities.

LOCATION

IST is located at Alameda D. Afonso Henriques, in the centre of Lisbon, equidistant from Saldanha and Alameda underground stations.

GETTING THERE FROM THE AIRPORT

Lisbon Airport is located 3.5 km North of IST campus. There are good connections from the airport to the area near IST:

By Underground Train (Metro): The Airport is connected to the center of the town by the underground train (Metropolitano). It has stops near the Instituto Superior Técnico and near the recommended hotels. The closest subway stations to IST are Alameda or Saldanha (both 5 min walk to IST). Every 6 to 9 minutes between 06:30 and 01:00 leaves a metro to and from Lisbon Airport. If you want to use the metro you have to purchase a Viva Viagem or 7 Colinas card of € 0.50, these electronic cards can be charged with money. A ride on the metro from the airport to any metro station in Lisbon will cost € 1.90 the first time and € 1.40 each time afterwards. You can buy a 24-hour ticket for € 6.00 (+ € 0.50) in case you plan to use the metro, bus or tram multiple times within 24 hours of purchase. However, zapping is the easiest and most economical way of paying for public transport in Lisbon, you pay only € 1.25 per trip. You need to buy one Viva Viagem or 7 Colinas card per person and load it with money (€ 10.00 is 8 rides).

By Bus: There exists a bus route, called Aerobus, providing a fast connection between the airport and Saldanha (tell the driver where you are going), a nearby square near the Institute. The AeroBus leaves every 20m (from 8.00 a.m. till 11:00 p.m.) and it costs more or less 4,00 euros. Please consult website Carris (bus and tram) and website and timetable Aerobus for more information.

By Taxi: Price around 10 to 15 Euros. A small tip of around 5 percent is appreciated but not essential.

GETTING THERE FROM OTHER LOCATIONS

Train: (CP - Portuguese Trains) get off at the station Gare do Oriente, from where you can take the underground train (Metropolitano) to Alameda, near IST. When arriving by coach, you may arrive at a terminus also in Gare do Oriente, or you may arrive at the coach station coach in Sete Rios. From Sete Rios there are connections by underground train (Metropolitano) or suburban train (to Entrecampos near IST).
