The Conference of Data Science, Statistics & Visualisation (DSSV 2018)
The conference of Data Science, Statistics & Visualisation (DSSV 2018)
will take place on July 9-11, 2018 in TU Wien, Austria. This meeting
shall create a forum to discuss recent progress and emerging ideas in
these different disciplines and encourage informal contacts and
discussions among all the participants. The conference welcomes contributions to practical
aspects of data science, statistics and visualisation, and in particular those which are linking and
integrating these subject areas. Presentations should thus be oriented towards a very wide
scientific audience, and can cover topics such as machine learning and statistical learning, the
visualisation and verbalization of data, big data infrastructures and analytics, interactive
learning, advanced computing, and other important themes.
The conference will feature the keynote speaker Helwig Hauser (University of Bergen) and
Xuming He (University of Michigan). Xuming He has made
very strong contributions to statistics and data science. Among
many other activities, he was editor of the Journal of the
American Statistical Association. The invited speakers are Zeynep Akata (University of Amsterdam), Mia Hubert, (KU
Leuven), Eric Postma (Tilburg University), Ryan Tibshirani (Carnegie Mellon University) and Sara van de Geer (ETH Zurich).

First deadlines are approaching:
– Early bird registration: March 26, 2018
– Abstract submission: April 9, 2018

We are looking forward to your contributions to practical aspects of data science, statistics and
visualisation, and in particular those which are linking and integrating these subject areas.

The TU Wien is situated in the very heart of Vienna, in the pulsating cultural centre of town.
Within easy walking distance are the Opera House, the art nouveau Secession building, the
Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic, from which the New Year’s Concert is annually
broadcast around the globe, and the splendid baroque Karlskirche (Church of St. Charles).

3rd Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing (LACSC)
The 3rd Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing
(LARS), the main conference of the Latin American Regional
Section (LARS) of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) was held in
San José, Costa Rica, from February 27 to March 2 2018. This year’s edition of the LACSC was
held together with the XXI International Symposium on Mathematical Methods Applied to the
Sciences (XXI SIMMAC), which is the most important event in applied mathematics in Central
America. More details can be found in: http://www.cimpa.ucr.ac.cr/simmac/en/lacsc.
The joint conferences 3rd LACSC and XXI SIMMAC were attended by 154 participants from 24
countries, with 109 papers being presented by keynote speakers, speakers in invited paper
sessions, speakers in contributed paper sessions and poster presenters. The scientific program
of the conference devoted directly to LARS included three keynote speakers, one short course,
six invited paper sessions, five contributed paper sessions and one poster session, with a total
of about 40 communications and a total of 46 participants from 17 different countries.

The social program included three events which allowed participants to meet each other and to
get a taste of the local culture, gastronomy and hospitality: the welcome cocktail, the gala dinner
with an amazing view on San José valley and the closing toast.
