Results of the election of the IASC Executive Committee 2021-2023

The new IASC executive committee has been elected (see https://iasc-isi.org/executive-committee/) and will continue to promote the activities of IASC. Many thanks to Juergen Symanzik for his work as President of the Association over the past two years.

Title: News from the IASC Executive Committee (September 2021)
Summary: IASC held its virtual Executive Committee meeting and General Assembly on September 6 and 8, 2021.
The IASC held its second virtual Executive Committee (EC) meeting on Monday, September 6, 2021, and its second virtual General Assembly (GA) on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. This virtual format was first used in 2020 and became necessary again due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Both meetings had very good attendances, with about 23 of the (incoming and outgoing) IASC EC members participating at the EC meeting and about 32 IASC members participating at the GA.

At both meetings, IASC activities, including reports from the three regional IASC sections and the African Members Group and the financial report, were discussed. The GA approved the IASC Annual Report for 2020 unanimously (25 Yes and 0 No votes).
IASC is financially stable and was able to slightly increase its membership in 2020, despite of the coronavirus pandemic. A possible explanation for this increase could be that virtual conferences and webinars attracted new participants that otherwise might not have been able to attend – and thus would not have joined IASC. We would like to use this opportunity to encourage all IASC members to renew their memberships for 2021 who did not do so already earlier in the year.

As reported in the Annual Report for 2020, most IASC events in 2020 had to be postponed or were held as a virtual meeting, e.g., via Whova or GoToWebinars. In particular, IASC Webinars become very popular. We would like to thank all organizers, instructors, and of course the participants, for making them so successful. An overview of IASC Webinars and other ISI Webinars can be found at https://www.isi-web.org/events/webinars. ISI will continue to make the GoToWebinars platform freely accessible to IASC and the other ISI Associations. You can expect to see more free webinars over the next year. If you have a suggestion for a webinar or would like to hold one yourself, reach out to a representative from a regional IASC section or from the African Members Group or directly contact Luis Firinguetti, the IASC Webinar Officer.
You can expect to see another IASC Data Analysis Competition (DAC) in 2023. The next Data Science, Statistics and Visualisation (DSSV) conference will be held as a hybrid event in Tainan City, Taiwan, in June 2022. All three regional sections of the IASC, the Asian Regional Section (ARS), the Latin American Regional Section (LARS), and the European Regional Section (ERS) plan to hold regional conferences and schools in 2022. As of now, these are intended to be held in virtual (LARS), hybrid (ARS), and physical (ERS) formats. Watch for further announcements on the IASC web site at https://iasc-isi.org/events-all/.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank my fellow IASC EC members for the successful collaboration over the past two years. I wish my successor as IASC President, Christophe Croux, and his team of new IASC EC members good luck for the next two years. While I really enjoyed being IASC President, I regret that I couldn’t interact with most of you in person. I hope this will eventually be possible again over time while I still hold the role as IASC Past-President. Stay healthy – and hopefully see you at a future IASC or ISI event in person! Summary: The IASC-LARS organized a webinar on Computational Statistics and Data Science on 27-30 September 2021: 265 students attended!
The Latin American Regional Section of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC-LARS), the IASC-LARS School on Computational Statistics and Data Science, the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI) held a successful IASC-LARS Webinar on Computational Statistics and Data Science on September 27-30, 2021. The webinar course “Machine Learning for Data Science” was team-taught by Professors Rodrigo Salas from Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile, Javier Linkolk López from Universidad Peruana la Unión, Perú, Dr. Marvin Querales Carrasquel and Ayleen Bertini Rojas from Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile.
In numbers:
•265 students attended the course
•Students come from 35 countries (13 from Latin American)
•33% of the students were female.
•undergraduate (16%), master (14%) and PhD students (15%), also attending academics (22%) and researchers (13%), and professionals from government institutions and private industry (6%).
We are glad that we are reaching the international community with diversity. We are also very grateful for the support provided by the International Statistical Institute and the Statistical Capacity Building Program.

IASC-ARS 2022 Outstanding Young Researcher/Student Award
The Award Committee of IASC-ARS 2022 will select some outstanding oral presentations and e-poster presentations by young researchers / students (30 years old or younger as of January 1st, 2022).
