Call for Short Courses – ISI WSC 2021
The ISI Short Course Committee for ISI WSC 2021 (SCC) [https://www.isi-web.org/index.php/community/standing-and-operational-committees/standing-and-operational-committees?id=8688] is inviting members of the ISI and its Associations to submit proposals to deliver online short courses.
The SCC is developing an online short course programme to be delivered over the summer months of June and July 2021 surrounding the 63rd ISI World Statistics Congress (WSC) [https://www.isi2021.org/]. The short courses will be scheduled in a 3 hour session each day at a time chosen to accommodate learners in many time zones. A short course can be scheduled for 1 day (3 hours total), 2 days (6 hours total) or 3 days (9 hours total).
The proposals for short courses received from members and other sources will be reviewed by the SCC who will recommend a proposed short course programme to be approved by the ISI Executive Committee. The scheduling and management of the delivery of the selected short courses will be arranged through the ISI Permanent Office.
The short courses should meet the needs of the Associations and Special Interest Groups and in particular, the needs of Young Statisticians, Continuing Professional Development and Statistical Capacity Building.
Up to two instructors per course will be reimbursed for the WSC registration. It is hoped that instructors will view this activity as a service to the international statistical community and a contribution to professional development and statistical capacity building for ISI members and the larger community.
Please complete the form [https://www.isi-web.org/index.php/component/rsform/form/102-online-short-course-proposal-form] and submit your proposal by 31 October 2020.

Invitation to Propose Invited Sessions for WSC 2021
Proposals due: 15 November 2020
The 63rd ISI WSC 2021 will be held 11-16 July as a virtual conference. The WSC theme “Statistics and Data Science for a Better World” highlights the developments and contributions of statistics and data science in various domains of application that impact all aspects of life. The Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee (SPC), Nalini Ravishanker, invites the statistical community to submit proposals for Invited Paper Sessions (IPS). Please use the Submission System.
The 63rd ISI WSC 2021 will host talks and presentations on a wide variety of topics, with the overall goal of presenting a balanced programme that provides a sense of the current state and future direction of statistics, data science and their applications. The programme will span sectors of practice including academia, business, industry, government and official statistics along with the breadth of ISI and Associations affiliated with ISI. Topics include but are not limited to official statistics, survey statistics, environmental statistics, business and industrial applications of statistics, mathematical statistics, probability, statistics and data science education, statistical literacy and statistical computing and data visualization.
Accepted Invited Sessions will be held either live-streamed or pre-recorded, details will be given later. The pre-recorded sessions will have a time to have live interactions with attendees. The SPC will determine which IPS will be offered in which modality, but all submissions should be willing to do either.
Live-streamed
Real-time (synchronous) sessions will be scheduled each day. This time block is necessarily limited, given the desire to reach out to all time zones. It will last two and a half hours from 14:00 to 16:30 Central European Summer Time. The relevant times are:
Country | Start | End |
West Coast USA | 05:00 | 07:30 |
The Netherlands | 14:00 | 16:30 |
Japan | 21:00 | 23:30 |
Australia (Sydney) | 22:00 | 00:30 |
New Zealand | 00:00 | 02:30 |
Pre-recorded
Asynchronous, pre-recorded sessions will be released each day during the conference. Opportunities to interact with presenters either live or via chat will be available.
Invited Paper Sessions
IPS proposals must meet the following requirements and include the following information:
- Session Title – description
- Connection to ISI, Associations or Committees
- Organiser – name, affiliation, contact information
- Session Chair – name, affiliation, contact information
- For each speaker,
- Name, affiliation, contact information
- Title of talk (if appropriate – not needed for panel)
- Abstract
The best proposals will include participants that reflect the diversity of ISI including age, gender and country/region. Strong proposals will have speakers confirming their willingness to participate should the programme be accepted. Note that speakers can only speak in one session.
When submitting a proposal, you should indicate to which of the ISI Associations your session is related:
- If you specify more than one Association, choose a primary one and your proposal will be first reviewed by that Association under the guidance of its representative on theSPC.
- If you think that your proposal does not relate to any ISI Association, you may choose ISI as the primaryassociation.
- Proposals will be reviewed by the SPC on a competitivebasis.
Just a quick reminder: each proposal should include a brief description and justification for the proposed session and a list of presenters and discussants who have agreed to participate. The selection criteria will take into account scientific quality, impact, and overall diversity.
IPS Selection Criteria
The SPC will select IPS to ensure that the WSC programme:
- is interesting, of high quality, with sessions that emphasize innovative ideas, approaches and/or applications to problems of importance;
- reflects a balance of Organisers / Presenters / Discussants from around the world and a diversity of participants with respect to age, gender and statistical interests.
Invited Papers historically have been and will continue to be a key feature of a successful WSC. We look forward to receiving your proposals!
Please read the Guidelines for Session Organisers before submitting your proposal.
Please submit your IPS proposal before 15 November 2020.
General enquiries about the Scientific Programme should be directed to Nalini Ravishanker at spc.chair@isi-web.org.

TEXT
The 5th Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing LACSC 2021 will be held in Ciudad de México, México, from April 19 to April 21, 2021. This international conference is jointly organized by the Department of Statistics and the Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering of the Instituto Autónomo de México (ITAM), the Latin American Regional Section of the International Association for Statistical Computing (LARS-IASC) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI). The theme of this year is “Statistical Computing for Intelligent Decision Making” and the Keynote Speakers,
- Wendy L. Martínez, Bureau of Labor Statistics, USA
- Daniel Russo, Columbia University, USA
- Enrique Sucar, Inst. Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptima y Electrónica, México
- Renato Assunção, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil
- Antonietta Mira, Università della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland
LACSC 2021 invites to submit papers, contributed paper sessions and invited paper sessions before January 11, 2021. The call of papers and all the information is available at http://lacsc2020.itam.mx
The aim of LACSC is to foster the progress of the theory, methods and practice of statistical computing in Latin America, and to become the main meeting point of the statistical computing scientific community in LA. This year, the call of papers of the conference gives an account of the interest of academics, scientists and professionals in methodological aspects of statistical computing and relevant applications for the Latin American community.
You cannot miss LACSC 2021! The Local Organizing Committee is also organizing an interesting social program. Mexico City is the capital of the Estados Unidos Mexicanos (official name of the country). Originally this city was built on an islet where some natives found an eagle devouring a snake and was called Tenochtitlan. Chinampas for agriculture were built around it and became the capital of the Aztec Empire. With the arrival of the Spaniards in 1521, Mexico City fell under its dominance and became the center of the economic activity of the power of New Spain. Its outstanding colonial architecture earned it recognition as the City of Palaces. Currently, Mexico City stands in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, proud of its heritage, the product of the fusion of two cultures. It is the largest and most populous city in Latin America and one of the most dynamic capitals in the world; It has a large number of museums, theaters, concert halls, archaeological ruins, theme parks and recreational parks. Also, it offers a great gastronomic variety typical of all regions of Mexico and the world.
