Last September a successful IASC-ERS summer school on R took place in Austria
From Sep. 23-27, 2013, a Summer School on the software environment R was organized by Peter Filzmoser and Matthias Templ (both from Vienna University of Technology) in the Education Center of the impressive monastery in Vorau, Austria. For practical reasons, the number of participants had to be limited to 40 and around 30 people were in the wait list.
The first day was devoted to an “R crash course”, which was taken by about half of the participants in order to get familiar with the major concepts of R. The program of the other days was addressed to more specific topics, like object orientation, visualization, data base interfaces, R packaging, parallel computing, embedding C/C++, etc. Also task oriented topics like text mining, microarray analysis, or dealing with large and out-of-memory data were presented. The lecturers (Andreas Alfons, Roland Boubela, Florian Endel, Ingo Feinerer, Alexander Kowarik, Alexandra Posekany, Matthias Templ, and Valentin Todorov) did not only present and provide their
material to the audience, but they also trained the participants with practical examples. Overall, the 40 participants from 14 countries were more than satisfied with this intensive week.
